I participate in an online forum, called Yttalk, and sometimes we get
into heated debates, here is a response I did to someone who was saying her
struggle was the same to a person of color in America. What are your
thoughts on racism and oppression based on race? Do white people get it as bad
as colored people?
Leave Your Thoughts Please!"There are people who get it, they know that if we had a black man and a white man with the exact same storyline, both have money, both wearing a suit, the white man still has a higher chance of getting what he wants than the black man. Look at the Donald Sterling thing, he was mad that his mistress took a picture with a black man, he didn't care that it was a super successful black man. It’s so funny that I was never playing the victim like you, only i was saying is that our struggles are different but you seem to think they are the same. White privilege isn't getting an abundance of resources its starting from the start line. No one is saying if you are white you get free money, and don't have to work or struggle. You are mad because you felt the oppressive force of capitalism (which you support), well welcome to capitalism. As for the black people being mean to you, is it wrong, DUH, but it is also an effect of oppression, i highly doubt any black would be mean, or hate white people if they weren't oppressed. The problem here is @Stef and I for the most part are talking about institutional oppression based on race, which in America is the primary source of racism. It’s so funny how you mention things being bad but don't even realize other things, you got to go visit family in another country, you got to see your heritage, all the kids weren't nice to you, but at least you got to know and experience that, most black people don't, most of our history was erased. Most black people are descendants of generations of mis-education, we had to rebuild our culture from scratch, as we were building our culture from scratch, people were still oppressing us, and still do today. When white people in America are being targeted by legislation that prohibits them to wear their clothes a certain way, when white people have stop and frisk targeted at them, when white people have to have most of their government represents be black, when white people have to be pulled off of a line at the airport for their skin color, when white people have to be pulled for over for driving a nice car, when white people have to fight against voter id laws knowing it is targeted at them, when white people are highly concentrated in cities and have less governmental assistance and opportunities, when white neighborhoods are gentrified by black people, and black people raise prices of everything making it unsustainable for them to live there, when white people are called a (N*****) on any social platform, when white people have multiple mass movements to try and dehumanize them, when white people are followed around in the store, when white people have to see people cross the street when they walk down the sidewalk, when white people have to hear “Wow you speak proper”, when white people have to hear “you are good looking for a white person”, when white people have to see their schools closing for no reason, when white people are called terrorists and not mentally ill, when white people have to fight for rights just to get to the next tier, when white people have to deal with old black men calling them lazy and telling them they would better off as slaves on national t.v., when white people are deported more than any other race, when white people are a minority in America but the majority of the prison population, when white have to fight for legislation to even have a chance to get into college, when white people have to fight for equality in schools, when white people have to deal with police commissioners across the country saying its ok to harass white people, when white people are assumed violent for being white, when a white woman can only find roles as a sassy white woman, when white people can only win an Oscar for playing a slave or a servant, then we can talk about white privilege not existing. Until then accept life will be hard under our current system for most, but our struggles are not the same in the slightest. My struggle doesn’t negate your struggle, a truly progressive person would’ve said wow I’ve went through oppression too, what do we do to stop it? Not I am a victim so give me a cookie."
